Sångaren, musikern och låtskrivaren Mike Scott föddes i Edinburgh den 14 december 1958. Han har lett gruppen The Waterboys från starten och de är igång ännu 40 år senare.
Mikes första band på skiva var Edinburgh-gruppen Another Pretty Face, bildat 1978 och efter några singlar kom de med ett album 1981. Därefter bildade han, med skivkontrakt för London-bolaget Ensign Records, The Waterboys vilka singeldebuterade med låten A Girl Called Johnny i mars 1983 och i juni samma år kom de med sitt självbetitlade debutalbum.
De följde upp dem med albumen A Pagan Place (1984) och This Is The Sea (1985).
Mike Scott var The Waterboys huvudsaklige låtskrivare från start och dessa album ovan i gruppens historia kallas Big Music-eran. Medlemmarna har skiftat genom åren med en viss kärna och när fiolspelaren Steve Wickham kom med i bandet flyttade de 1986 sin bas till Irland och nu kom deras Celtic Music-fas. Albumen Fisherman’s Blues (1988) och Room To Roam (1990) gjorde dem till ett stort namn internationellt.
The Waterboys har varit Mikes fokus genom åren men han kom även med två album under bara sitt egna namn, Bring ‘Em All In (1995) och Still Burning (1997). Han spelade på Kåren den 2 december 1997 men tyvärr kom jag inte iväg dit. Däremot träffade jag honom när han kom han upp till oss på P4 Radio Göteborg vid Delsjövägen 2003 och jag gjorde en längre liveintervju med honom då. Inspirerande.
The Waterboys har turnerat flitigt genom åren. De har spelat i Sverige ofta sedan 1989 och de var bl. a på Hultsfredsfestivalen 1990. Till Göteborg dröjde det dock till december 2000 då de kom till Trädgårn. Missade den men har sett de andra fem gångerna. Först på Stora Teatern 2007 därefter i Lorensbergsteatern 2015, på Konserthuset 2018 och nu senast i Trädgårn i april i år.
